Becoming an educational leader – exploring leadership in medical education

What is it about?

When people go from being one member of staff to getting the responsibility of e.g. a course, program or project, it is not always obvious how this process involves development of a new role: that of educational leadership. This paper is an exploration of what it means to become an educational leader in medical education and offers a framework for important aspects included in developing educational leadership, rather than just taking on the administrative role of managing a course.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that educational leadership involves a process involving four dimensions: leading development, enabling learning, creating a learning environment and creating bridges and networks. Thus, educational leadership is made explicit as an approach to an academic role which too often has been viewed as purely administrative.
