What is it about?

In social science education, many topics can be seen as sensitive in nature. There is growing debate about how we should teach them including about the use of 'trigger warnings'. This study shows that while students can be upset or experience discomfort, they still want to learn about sensitive issues. They strongly believe that this is an essential part of social science degree education.

Why is it important?

There is increasing pressure on universities to increase student satisfaction. This could be interpreted as removing difficult or distressing topics from the curriculum. This study of student experiences shows that students value studying sensitive issues and that they see university as a good place to explore them.
