This article outlines what a sample of successful students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds told us helped them succeed. The focus is on teaching strategies and approaches, and the characteristics of the teachers they found most helpful to success. Not surprisingly, they favoured clear communication about assessment and other requirements of them and accessibility of teaching staff to answer queries, among other factors.
