What is it about?
This is the introduction to a special issue on debates about (the legalization of) same-sex marriage in the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States. The contributions aim to show that these debates were not only about marriage rights, but also about marriage rites. Moreover, these contributions show the multiple functions and meanings of "religion" in these debates.
