What is it about?
Cardiovascular diseases has been a heavy burden for human kind in the last years, in this paper the authors highlighted the patents using terpenes and/or derivatives in the treatment of these diseases emphasizing the possibility of these compounds becoming new drugs in the next years.

Why is it important?
We overview the patents from the major databases in the last 10 years showing the use of terpenes or derivatives in the treatment or prevention of cardiovascular diseases, together with the probable indication/action mechanism, experimental model, compounds and formulation.
Perspectives
We hope that this paper can serve as an encouragement to increase the variety of drugs available for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, specially from natural products which has been a great source for therapeutical products. Also hoping that by using alternatives sources for new drugs can decrease expenses in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. And finally, that more natural products associated with biotechnology can produce patents for real application into the pharmaceutical industry.
