What is it about?
The Kurdish population of Northern Iraq have long held independence ambitions. The following paper explores how such moves; performed without a diversified economy, viable institutional frameworks, and support from at least one of its neighbors, will inherently lead to economic failure.

Why is it important?
From a geopolitical standpoint, those who support Kurdish independence need to understand the broader long term dynamics of such moves. Leaders within the region require an understanding of not only the political, but also economic factors at play, and an understanding of these factors will lead to more informed decision making for such moves in the future.
Perspectives
The recently witnessed Independence Referendum in September 2017 was disastrous for Iraqi Kurdistan and it's people. Many predicted the economic turmoil that would follow, however those responsible for such moves failed to calculate such factors. Information, analysis, and understanding is important when considering the dynamics of an independent state, to ensure future decisions are better guided and lead to long term benefits for the local population.
