What is it about?
Agriculture is the economic mainstay of Bhutan, but most farmland are located on steep hill sides. To maintain land productivity, sustainable land management is very important. However, sustainable land management is done in different ways by different agencies. It is important to find out which approach is more effective considering the extensive labour requirement of land management work, farm labour shortage and socioeconomic background of the communities. The two common land management approaches used in Bhutan are community based and individual household based. This study looks at which one of these two approaches is more effective.

Why is it important?
It is important to see which approach is more effective because we need to know the social, the economic and the environmental impact of the approach. Moreover, land management work requires extensive labour and many farm are in rural Bhutan are youthless and toothless. Young people have migrated to urban areas in search of better lives. In such situation, we need to come up approach or technology that suits best to the ground reality.
