What is it about?
The way we speak is influenced by many social and linguistic factors. Our studies discover the influence of Mandarin on the way Mandarin-English bilinguals in Malaysia speak English. We hypothesise the influence of other major languages spoken in the multiracial country.

Why is it important?
Our work has demonstrated the influence of Mandarin as a first language on the second language acquisition of Malaysian Chinese. The phonological features of Mandarin language play an important role in the way Malaysian Chinese pronounce their English initial stop consonants, setting them apart from other Malaysian speakers. The findings are hoped to enlighten the speech pathologists, sociolinguists and educational policymakers in the phonetic variation of English worldwide.
