What is it about?
In a tranport model the Origin-Destination Matrix (OD-matrix) is of key importance. The OD-matrix describes the trips between geographic areas. The estimation of an OD-matrix is a time-consuming process (and therefore also not cheap0. Using measured trip information obtained from Mobile Phones is of great help to improve the quality of these OD-matrices.

Why is it important?
The quality of OD-matrices in transport models can be improved by using trip information from Mobile Phones. Transport models are used in many ways for policy making decisions (e.g. new infrastructure). The use of mobile phone data offers the opportunity to better understand the day-to-day dynamics in traffic and updating transport models more frequently, providing more accurate decision information, making it possible to address problems faster, but also addressing problems of which little was known (e.g., non-regular traffic conditions) and addressing problems that are difficult to model.
