Artificial antioxidants therapy in IBD via the mitochondria

Featured Image

Why is it important?

Several studies have shown mitochondria dysfunction in IBD, however not much has been done to address this problem.

Perspectives

Since it is clear that mitochondria are certainly important in the maintenance of the intestinal epithelium homeostasis and that mitochondrial radical production and subsequent stress damage is involved in the development and IBD mechanism. Therefore, treatment approaches to lower ROS should be further investigated by either large amount of natural antioxidants or artificial antioxidants with better potency, bioavability and pharmacokines. The conclusions discussed here propose that the intestinal mitochondrial may be used as a new focus in the therapy and cure for IBD.
