What is it about?

The researchers in this study explore mothers' experience of emotionally supporting their child following the disclosure of sexual abuse. Using the qualitative method techniques of interviewing and transcript analysis, authors were able to gain a better understanding of the process mothers experience following their child's disclosure and how it impacts the types of emotional support they provide to their child.

It helps further our understanding of the concept of maternal emotional support in the context of child sexual abuse disclosure; a concept which has been critiqued as poorly defined and operationalized in the literature. It also provides a unique perspective on mothers experience throughout the child abuse disclosure process and what their needs might during this period as well as what their needs are in order to help emotionally support their child.
