A literature review aimed to describe what is currently known about nurses’ assessment decisions when providing care to patients at home or in their usual place of residence.

Why is it important?
It is important to understand what influences nursing clinical judgements and decisions in the delivery of HITH nursing care. Patient assessments; in combination with nursing education, experience, abilities, prior learning, beliefs, attitudes and values all appear to be key factors.
Perspectives
This article highlights that there are gaps in the literature when enquiring how HITH nurses make clinical decisions when caring for patients at home.
