What is it about?

Our paper explores how queer perspectives and approaches apply to the teaching profession, including Initial Teacher Education (ITE). We review key literature and present four reflective vignettes that illustrate key concepts, including the nature and impact of homophobia and transphobia in educational contexts

Why is it important?

Teacher educators and teacher training institutions can provide support, care, and guidance to the LGBTQI+ community, inclusive of queer teachers. Our paper provides insights into the literature and lived experience. We provide recommendations for the teaching profession, universities providing ITE, and researchers engaged in this area of inquiry.

Perspectives

We approached this paper with an interest in capturing lived experience and considering how this can offer insights to the teaching profession, particularly for those who are committed to creating and sustaining caring, safe classrooms for all staff and students.
