What is it about?
The "correct" fatigue life defintion is in the transient zone between fatigue initiation phase and failure phase. The target was to obtain an automatic determination which can be easily used in the fatigue process.

Why is it important?
The definition Nph of the ACP-F model will lead to a fatigue life in the transient zone but the determination is subjective and not suited for an automatic procedure. The definition Nmn used in the ASTM and AASHTO standards is based on a simplification of the fatigue initiatioin phase and failure phase by two straight lines. When the slope of the failure phase is not steep enough the Nmn value will be in the failure phase. A modification of the definition (Nmn*) overcomes this problem.
