What is it about?
Perinatal undernutrition has adverse effects on spatial learning and memory during adult life. The BDNF level in the hippocampal region was significantly reduced by perinatal undernutrition which was effectively modulated by astaxanthin supplementation. BDNF was speculated to be one of the contributors in learning memory impairment in perinatally undernourished rats. This was effectively modulated by astaxanthin supplementation during the perinatal period.

Why is it important?
The perinatal period is critical for brain development in most mammalian species. Maternal health and nutrition during the perinatal period is the predominant factor influencing brain functional development. Maternal malnutrition during perinatal period cause retardation of brain development. Supplementation of astaxanthin during the perinatal period to undernourished mothers benefit the young ones for the proper brain functions.
Perspectives
The result of our study is a kind of interesting and maybe even exciting. We proved the role of FDA approved nutraceutical, Astaxanthin has a potential role in enhancing the expression of BDNF.
