What is it about?

This article takes its cue from Mike Oliver's typology of disability organisations in the UK and discusses the type of disability organisations in Malta, with a focus on how many are led by disabled people themselves, and how many are led by parents of disabled people or by professionals.

Why is it important?

Organisations led by disabled people (Disabled People's Organisations or DPOs)play a key role in promoting disabled people's perspectives, in line with the disabled people's movement slogan of 'Nothing About Us Without Us'.

Perspectives

It is encouraging that since I published this article, there are now more DPOs in Malta.
