What is it about?
In this article attention is drawn to the interplay between politics and Orthodox religion by looking at the restitution of property to the Russian Orthodox Church. Instead of focusing on the higher echelons of power emphasis is put on the local situation. Herewith it becomes clear that this is an important addition for understanding power relations in more detail.

Why is it important?
This article is an attempt to understand the interplay between politics and Russian Orthodoxy better. For this, however, we need access to first-hand information as for example by conducting long-term ethnographic fieldwork. Based on this methodology a new approach is suggested which is called 'entangled authorities'. Herewith attention is drawn to close cooperation without neglecting unintended consequences and conflicts. In addition, different forms of entanglement are analyzed which allow for a more realistic picture of cosntellations of power in the Russian Federation.
Perspectives
This article is part of a larger project which analyzes politics and Russian Orthodoxy by looking at property restitution to religious organizations, religious education, religious sources of conservativsm, and the introduction of new festive days with both, religious and secular notions. Based on ethnographic fieldwork between 2013 and 2016, it is attempted to provide a full picture of the relation between two centers of power in conteporary Russia: politics and Russian Orthodoxy.
