Why is it important?

Until now few research have examined war commemoration in small towns of post-Soviet Russia. My research fills the vacuum by showing the way that local authorities reinvent local war symbols and consolidate local identity by using them.

Perspectives

One of the strongest points of this article is to provide vivid voices of local people that I collected during my interviews in Smolensk region. It is amazing to know how important WWII memories for them are even today. Thus, the local authorities are able to consolidate local identities by using war memories while Putin government succeeded in enhancing local patriotism and eventually unifying nation by using those memories.
