What is it about?

The systems of spatial governance and planning allow and rule the spatial development in each national context, with the resulting consequences for the life of entire cities, regions and countries. The recent global crisis is a test case for Europe, that highlights which systems are better or worse equipped in the public interest.

Why is it important?

Inadequate regulation of spatial development is at the origin of the current global crisis and increases, in years of crisis, the unequal distribution of wealth and democratic instability. The operation of systems of spatial governance and planning, through which States regulate spatial development, is at the core of this phenomenon. Unfortunately, the awareness of this by scholars, decision-makers and public opinion is still scarce.

Perspectives
