Why is it important?
Germany is the most important polity in Europe. What happens in Germany matters in a way that is not the case in most European states. The Greens were a key player in early coalition negotiations following the 2017 Federal election.
Perspectives
Writing this article was an opportunity to return to themes I first examined in my first book The Red-Green Coalition in Germany: Politics, Personalities and Power. Manchester: Manchester University Press, 2000. The party has lost its way in many respects but that in itself is interesting.
