What is it about?

Urban games, associated with pastime, have been used to fulfil educational functions in the open air, museums, public buildings, etc. Modern-day information and communication technology makes it possible to enrich the physical space with digital elements in such games. Is it possible to design and implement a technology assisted language game in an upper-secondary school? Will urban gaming provide desirable educational effects? Will it be seen as enjoyable and meaningful by students-participants?

Why is it important?

The study reveals that urban gaming can supplement learning in an upper-secondary school. The findings provide evidence that students developed their skills with regard to teamwork, digital literacy, the English language, and content (history) knowledge.

Perspectives

Conducting this study with an upper-secondary school teacher was a particularly enriching experience. The project showed that a cooperation between a university and a secondary school can bring unexpected results.
