This article presents a piece of teacher classroom research which involved teaching communication strategies to young learners in German to help them to start talking. Data was subsequently collected to evaluate how learners were using the strategies in their speaking.

Why is it important?

Beginning learners have restricted knowledge of the language and it can be difficult for them to start talking. The aim of the research was to provide them with some basic strategies to allow them to initiate and maintain conversation in German. Results showed that learners used strategies they were taught in classroom talk but used fewer strategies in an oral test situation.
