What is it about?

This study described changes adopted by Delhi in National strategy to improve continuum of care of HIV-TB coinfected patients. The strategy has increased initiation of ART during TB treatment in such patients from earlier 50% to above 90%. This in turn has improved their survival.

Why is it important?

ART should be initiated to all HIV-TB coinfected patients after 2 weeks of initiating TB treatment. Previously only 50% patients were initiated ART during TB treatment. Simple change in cross referral system b/w RNTCP and NACP resulted in significant improvement in survival of such patients.

Perspectives

The study has policy implications for states of India where results of National strategy have been disappointing.
