Why is it important?

Several students who speak languages that are not considered legitimate in school settings are often excluded from knowledge construction. They rather receive knowledge coded in language(s) that are not those of their nurture, which they are still acquiring proficiency in. This practice excludes students from accessing literacy and content area knowledge necessary to excel in school.

Perspectives

Hidden language policies are often influenced by educational stakeholders beliefs.
