What is it about?

In this work we evaluate the gesture consistency of 13 clarinetists during several performances. The goal is to establish an objective relation between their expressive gestural patterns and the music structure. Results indicate recurrent sequences of clarinet gestures in regions of the excerpts that were shown to be related to key musical moments.

Why is it important?

Expressiveness in music performances is something that exists but is not objectively measured. We believe that the acoustic expressive contents are reflected on performer gestures. In this paper we look for evidences of expressiveness simultaneously present in the music acoustics and in performer gestures.

Perspectives

This publication presents a method to quantify the coordination between acoustical and gestural expressiveness in music performances. This is one of the first steps in the direction of comprehending how performers convey information beyond that registered by composers.
