What is it about?

Salinity is serious problem hampering agricultural productivity throughout the world especially, Australi, India, Pakistan. The improvement of salt tolerance in field crops especially wheat is focus of the scientist for last many decades. In this study, selected wheat genotypes were tested for genetic variation in various physiological and ionic determinants of salt tolerance and it was concluded that regulation of Na+ uptake and transport, RGR & electrolyte leakage % are driving determinants.

Why is it important?

About 40% of the cultivated lands of Pakistan is salt-affected. Bringing this waste lands, into production system is challenging and very important for future food security of the nation. Wheat is staple food of the country and moderately tolerant to salt stress. Exploiting the genetic variations and identification of salt tolerant germplasm will not only help the farmers of the affected areas, but also provide a valuable material for future breeding programs.
