What is it about?

We examined the grades of undergraduate students who repeated (retook) courses. Students improved their grades by an average of 15 marks, but with a wide range of results. Students with the lowest original marks tended to get the largest improvements when repeating. By contrast, students with the highest overall averages tended to get the highest marks when repeating.

Why is it important?

A large minority of undergraduate students need to repeat at least one course during their degree. This research tries to help them understand the likely outcomes. This could help students make better decisions about their studies.

Perspectives

This study was motivated by my own classroom teaching experience.
