What is it about?
Thrombosis is a very complex manifestation of many interacting pathways. But the focus of all these interactions is the prevention of invasion. Unfractionated Heparin (UHF) is able to interact with many different partners. Since 1964 UFH is used as preventive therapy of DIC. This knowledge is lost and has to be renewed.

Why is it important?
What I learned as a student in Goettingen 1975 from Prof. Dr. Kuhn ("Unfractionated Heparin is the guardian angel of women with gynaecological sepsis") is still true. But this knowledge is lost. We have to rethink.
Perspectives
Unfractionated Heparin, cheap and simple, is the most important drug to save patients with impending disseminated intravascular coagulation. This knowledge was clear cut in a stone like the Rosetta Stone. But we have to understand it again.
