Why is it important?
Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) migrant women’s workplace experiences have received little attention in contemporary literature. This paper aims to address the research gap by focusing on social integration of Pakistani Muslim migrant women in their Australian workplaces. Drawing on data involving interviews with 28 women, this paper explores their barriers to workplace integration. By employing an intersectionality framework, this study reveals that Pakistani women encounter several challenges in the process of social integration due to the intersections of gender, culture, religion and non-English Speaking background. Additionally, certain organisational practices and experiences of discrimination further hinder integration process. It is concluded that the current policies promoting diversity and inclusion are not effectively implemented in practice, leading to intersectional disadvantages for Pakistani migrant women in Australian workplaces.
Perspectives
This important study involves an insider perspective that looks at a previously overlook group of migrants - Pakistanis women - who have struggled but were also determined to be part of the Australian workforce.
