What is it about?

(1)This review primarily focuses on the microbe metabolic pathways, biotechnology principles, the improvement of the value of organisms and applications in environmental concerns by fungi and related advanced combined biotechnology with nanomaterials which may open up a revolutionary new field in environmental engineering. (2) Evidence indicates that more and more endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) pollutants were detected either in the aquatic environment or soils, so EDCs pollution has become a serious problem which should be solved imperatively. (3) Recently, developing advanced biotechnology combined with nanomaterials for contaminants biotransformation has become a hot topic. We illustrated the advanced application that bio-catalysis of WRF combined with adsorption of nanomaterials (including silver nanoparticle, selenium nanoparticle and titanium dioxide nanoparticle) in detail. (4) We reviewed recent novel findings in biotransformation of EDCs by white rot fungi (WRF), and discuss the trends in WRF technology, based on summarizing and analyzing fungal molecular, metabolic and genetic mechanisms which offer novel information about the biotransformation pathways and their degradation mechanisms. (5) This review mainly revealed the removal pathway of heavy metal and antibiotic pollutants because the single pollution almost did not exist in a real environment meanwhile the combined pollution has become more serious

Why is it important?

EDC is a specific category of chemicals that attracted a great deal of public and scientific attention. WRF and advanced combined biotechnology with nanomaterials are proved to be effective in removal of EDCs. However, there are still many problems for us to solve: the deficiency of basic perceiving in metabolic biotransformation pathways, in application of complex environment and in genomic changes related to these reactions. Few reviews focused on the advanced combined application of biotechnology and nanotechnology to remove EDCs pollutants. Therefore, we present the review about the research progress and future trends of WRF and advanced combined biotechnology with nanomaterials as promising tools for EDCs removal. In this context, the formation of intermediate product, the function of different enzymes and the resistance mechanisms during EDCs metabolic process by WRF are introduced in detail. We also deeply discuss the biogeochemical cycling of metals and carbons in EDCs removal processes by advanced combined biotechnology with nanomaterials.
