What is it about?

Explains the process we used to establish a way to assess the needs of family caregivers taking care of loved one being treated for cancer. Results of the caregivers' questionnaires were provided to the medical social worker who assist in resolving the identified needs.

Why is it important?

Research has verified oncology family caregivers are as stressed, if not more, than the patient who has cancer. Support services are often provided to the patient but caregivers typically suffer in silence. Establishing a caregiver assessment process, the caregiver's needs are now identified and addressed. Through this early intervention by the medical social worker, assistance can be provided before a crisis occurs.

Perspectives

I hope this article will identify the benefits of supporting the oncology family caregiver and cancer centers across the country will work to establish a similar program. Supporting the caregiver benefits the patient which allows both to thrive during the cancer journey.
