What is it about?

Some laboratories need to rapidly identify fungal isolates. For example, the Alberta Plant Health Lab provides diagnostic support for regulated pests such as Fusarium graminearum. This paper describes an improved method for PCR-based identification of Fusarium graminearum cultures. The method omits the DNA extraction step, making it three- to four-times faster, and is very sensitive and specific.

Why is it important?

For laboratories performing multiple identifications or screenings for Fusarium graminearum, the method is much faster, and is very sensitive and accurate.
