What is it about?

Rice is grown as a rain–fed and irrigated crop and considered as one of the key enterprises facilitating economic growth and stability in Vietnam. Studies carried out to date report varying results on straw application in relation to GHG emissions from paddy fields. Farmers commonly maintain water in the paddy fields throughout the crop season, which increases GHG owing to inappropriate use of water for irrigation.

Why is it important?

Very little or no information are available on the combined use of water and rice straw management from paddy fields on CH4 and N2O emissions, particularly in Central Vietnam. Therefore, these field studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of AWD and rice straw management on GHG emissions.

Perspectives

We hope this paper provide information on the influence of rice straw and water management on CH4 and N2O emissions from rice fields of Central Vietnam. It presents recent advances in plant and soil science, emphasizing on water and rice straw management for sustainable use of soil, increasing yield and dealing with environment problems
