What is it about?
Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) determination by multicapillary zone electrophoresis (Capillarys 2 Flex Piercing® analyzer) can additionally be used to detect HbA2, HbF and most frequent hemoglobin variants. We assessed the effectiveness of this method for detecting β-thalassemia, δβ-thalassemia and most common hemoglobin variants. Moreover, HbF/HbA2 is evaluated as an index for discriminating between β and δβ-thalassemias trait. The theoretical β-thalassemia major birth rate in our healthcare area is calculated and contrasted with real data. The prevalence of these pathologies and their mutations are estimated over a large sample of the population.

Why is it important?
It sets the basis to establish an efficient screening program for β-thal and Hbvar based on a routine checkup when HbA1c is requested, especially in racial/ethnic groups or countries with a high prevalence of these pathologies. Additionally, its use can be helpful in educational and prevention campaigns.
