What is it about?

This paper is about cultural diversity in higher education and how such diversity is institutionally managed. Rooted in the narratives of 12 international students in Portugal, the paper gives account of many failures in the way in which higher education institutions support international students.

Why is it important?

This paper is important because it questions a frequently unquestioned assumption according to which international students present deficits that need to be corrected in order for them to be able to become successfully integrated in a foreign university and foreign context. Following multiculturalist theories, the paper explains that such an assumption is based on assimilation logics that suggest that universities can remain the same while international students are the ones who need to change and adapt.

Perspectives

This paper is relevant because it provides a more comprehensive perspective on cultural diversity management in institutional settings and also a set of diverse recommendations on how universities could improve their integration policies in regard to international students.
