What is it about?
Above-level testing is the practice of administering to a child a test which is designed for a population that is older or in a more advanced grade. This frequently occurs in gifted education and advanced academics. Above-level testing is also called out-of-level testing, out-of-grade testing, and above-grade testing.

Why is it important?
Hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren receive above-level tests every year. This is an old practice, but it has not had as much empirical exploration as it should. My article discusses the history of the practice and the empirical research behind it.
