The systems of spatial governance and planning allow and rule the spatial development in each institutional context, with the resulting consequences for the life of entire cities, regions and countries. Two distinct cultural models shape these systems across Europe.

Why is it important?

The European Union does not hold powers of spatial governance and planning, but is engaged with the economic, social and territorial cohesion of Europe. The latter is hardly achievable if national systems of spatial governance and planning are not coordinated according with common principles of effectiveness in the aim of the public interest.
