What is it about?

We have developed a conceptual framework of socio-technical generativity to explain the challenges and opportunities for developing countries to participate in developing Apps on top of software platforms. Based on a study in Malawi, we illustrate how innovation in developing countries depends on technical attributes of platforms as well as social relationships.

Why is it important?

For developing countries to take relevant roles in software development, they cannot only be users and participate in the implementation of software developed elsewhere. One way of taking a more active role in software innovation, developing countries can engage in App development on top of platforms.

Perspectives

Interesting endeavour to work with and conceptualize and draw general learnings software innovation and App development efforts in Malawi.
