What is it about?
Structural alloys are generally strengthened by multiple obstacles types. Dislocation-dislocation interactions in these diverse systems show different rate sensitivities. The reasons behind these different behaviours is still unknown. In the present work we have analysed the dislocation-obstacle interactions and put forward an explanation.

Why is it important?
We have used stress relaxation technique to investigate the rate sensitive behaviour and show that rate sensitivity of peak aged alloys is higher than that in pure material or solid solution. We propose that the difference is due to the difference between the length of the dislocation segment involved in the thermally activated overcoming of the short range obstacles.
Perspectives
Age hardenable Al alloys are important structural materials. This is a continuation of our work on rate sensitive behaviour of age hardenable aluminum alloys. We have tried to answer one question but came out many more questions to answer.
