We studied the influence of verb argument structure on the easiness to recognize Spanish verb-noun compound words. Electrophysiological recordings were taken during the lexical decision task that wwas performed.

Why is it important?
A central question regarding compound words is how these words are processed. This question relates to two main aspects: (a) are they processed as whole words or through their constituents? and (b) how is meaning assigned to the compound? i.e., how are two independent meanings linked in order to establish a new, single one? Our results show that verb argument structure and metaphorical processes influence Spanish Verb–noun compound processing. Similarly to endocentric English Noun–noun compounds, processing Spanish Verb–noun compounds involves specific conceptual operations. These conceptual combinations appear to be determined by the projection of verb argument structure and the mapping and assignation of thematic roles.
Perspectives
I believe the study contributes to understand how compound words are processed, and how they are assigned meaning. The results help to see that exocentric words such as Spanish verb-nound compounds require specific conceptual combinations to be processed and understood.
