What is it about?

This study explored liminal learning in a teacher education program that used mixed reality simulations prior to and within clinical placements.

Why is it important?

Mixed-reality simulations that focus on threshold concepts—for this study defined as high leverage practices—prior to implementation in a clinical placement may increase the effectiveness of the practice in a clinical placement later. The purpose of this study was to explore how threshold concepts as part of a practice-based teacher education program were experienced in mixed reality simulations.

Perspectives

Unlike the situated learning within traditional clinical placements, mixed reality simulations support a laboratory learning environment where pre-service teachers practice their instruction with low risk to both the pre-service teachers and to human students. Simulation experiences can be used in teacher education programs to prepare candidates for the field within a carefully designed curriculum that measures threshold learning.
