What is it about?

Archives are an important part of our society. They help us reflect on past actions in order to make informed decisions. These treasured records have valuable information regarding our Governments, history, identity, culture, and heritage. Strangely in east and Southern Africa, these are the least known institutions. This paper reports on a project that looked into ways archivists can raise awareness about archives to get more people in this society to use the archives and even contribute to them.

Why is it important?

We live in a society where information is critical in all aspects of our lives. People are not always aware of where to find credible information to address their information needs. It is important that our society is made aware of what is available in archival repositories and the relevance of this information in their lives.

Perspectives

I enjoyed writing this paper, and it seemed like a start to many more initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa that may lead to public archives in this region having a wider reach into society.
