What is it about?

Brick kiln waste was used as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of strontium, cesium, and lead cations by fixed-bed column technique. It was characterized using SEM, XRD, XRF, TGA&DTA, and particle size analyzer.

Why is it important?

Low-cost adsorbent was used, the column performance was 80.1%, 73.6%, and 68.5% for Pb2+, Cs+, and Sr2+, respectively. Scale-up of continuous processes was studied by applying some kinetic column models. Exhausted bed was regenerated using 0.2 mol/L HNO3 and multiple 10 reused for further adsorption which is necessary for the industrial applications and maintenance cost of the adsorption treatment plant. The process is simple, eco-efficient, and environmentally friendly.

Perspectives

From the fixed-bed column experiments, it was found that the brick kiln waste exhibited favorable adsorption of Pb2+, Cs+, and Sr2+. Brick kiln waste column was regenerated using 0.2 mol/L HNO3 and reused multiple times for further sorption which is needful for the industrial application and maintenance cost of the treatment plant.
