What is it about?
Pornography consumption has grown significantly in recent decades and has become an increasingly present phenomenon in everyday life. Traditionally, research has focused on analyzing how frequently it is consumed and how it relates to various aspects of sexual health. Some studies have pointed to associations with difficulties such as sexual or relationship dissatisfaction, while others have found connections to positive experiences, such as higher sexual arousal, masturbation, or sexual communication. However, to truly understand this phenomenon, it is not enough to know how much pornography is consumed; it is also necessary to understand why it is consumed. Reasons can vary depending on factors such as age, gender, sexual orientation, or relationship status. To study these motivations, there is the Pornography Consumption Inventory (PCI), a scientific tool that has already been validated in different countries and cultures. In its Spanish version, initially developed for a university population, the PCI identifies three main motives for consumption: regulating or avoiding unpleasant emotions, satisfying sexual curiosity and seeking sexual excitation or sexual pleasure. With the aim of testing whether this instrument is also useful in the general Spanish population, the research team at LabSex UGR conducted a study. The results showed that the questionnaire maintains a solid structure based on three dimensions and measures motivations for consuming pornography equivalently across different population groups. Thanks to this, it is possible to reliably compare people of different ages, genders, sexual orientations, or relationship statuses. Additionally, the research found that motivations for consuming pornography are not the same for everyone. Differences exist according to gender, age, and sexual orientation. Furthermore, consumption motives were related to various dimensions of the sexual response, such as sexual arousal, solitary sexual desire, and the subjective orgasm experience.

Why is it important?
Overall, these findings reinforce the usefulness of the PCI as a valid tool for research and clinical practice in Spain. Understanding the reasons leading to pornography consumption can contribute to developing better sexual education strategies, promoting a more balanced and less stigmatized view of this phenomenon, and helping distinguish between recreational consumption and consumption that might be used as a maladaptive way to cope with emotional distress.
Perspectives
It is not how much is consumed that explains the phenomenon, but why it is consumed.
