What is it about?

In this article, we identified the strategies exemplary schools with large numbers of newly arrived immigrant origin youth employed to meet the educational needs of their students. We found that these schools provided a comprehensive approach to support the social emotional, language, and academic needs of their newcomer students and present common practices for improving outcomes for newly arrived immigrant-origin students.

Why is it important?

When educators discuss immigrant youth, learning English typically is too often the only topic of conversation. While second language acquisition is certainly a critical issue for newcomer students, it ignores the multitude of strengths as well as challenges they bring with them upon entering schools in a new land. Mounting research attests to the diverse needs of our immigrant students, whose presence evokes ambivalence, and sometimes, outright hostility due to xenophobia, racism, or islamophobia in their contexts of reception. Our findings exemplify a strength-based approach that take a wholistic approach to welcoming in immigrant students and their families and set them up for success.
