What is it about?

City governments around the world are in a race to build more smart cities. But are these high-tech conurbations safe? That is the question we set out to answer in this research article. Specifically, we uncovered four major digital vulnerabilities endemic to smart cities that if exploited by malicious hackers, could result in substantial digital and physical damages. We also proposed a novel solution to counteract the threat.

Why is it important?

Smart cities are rapidly rising across the globe. Yet, major questions remain over their safety, especially from a digital standpoint. By identifying critical digital vulnerabilities endemic to these high-tech conurbations, this research article not only contributes to the emerging body of literature on the subject but also to the building of smart cities that are digitally secure.

Perspectives

It was a great pleasure to write this research article as we had the valuable opportunity to contribute to the building of smart cities that are also safe. We also felt deeply privileged because we were able to gain deep insights into an arcane subject and as a result of our research, could advance state-of-the-art knowledge.
