What is it about?

Darwinian evolution is reconsidered from a microscopic perspective. The exposition integrates well-defined teleonomic processes, objectively governed by an evolved program, leading up to a self-referential hypothesis for molecular proto-communication, Communication Simpliciter.

Why is it important?

It is explicitly proven that active and mirror neurons provide communication protocols for cellular recognition and networking. The paradox of upside-down vision is explained together with a basic and straightforward analysis of Necker’s Cube- and the Spinning Dancer illusions.

Perspectives

In honoring my colleague and friend Michael Baer on the occasion of his 80th birthday, the article gave me an opportunity to reread Jacques Monod’s classic essay, “Chance and Necessity". This enhanced my understanding of authentic scientific pursuits as well as the unique power of the self-referential conundrum. I hope this fascination will rub off to the prospective reader.
