Edward Thring, the pioneering headmaster of Uppingham School from 1853 to 1887, used three literary heroes to bolster his spirits at difficult times: Roland (of the Song of Roland), Jacob (of ladder to heaven) and Jackanapes (a schoolboy warrior).
