What is it about?
We define the stratigraphic architecture of the Mexican foreland basin, which represents the southern continuation of the late Mesozoic Cordilleran foreland basin. In this work, we identify the potential sediment sources that filled the foreland basin and recognize sediment-dispersal systems.

Why is it important?
This paper document the sedimentary fill of the Mexican foreland basin and link Late Cretaceous sedimentation to magmatic events in the Mexican Cordilleran arc. The study fills in a relative data gap in the North American Cordilleran arc and foreland basin system, which is extensively studied in the United States, but far less so in Mexico.

WILCOX AND DIFUNTA GROUPS AND CHICONTEPEC FORMATION: PROVENANCE AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MAGMATIC ARC OF WESTERN MEXICO
Newly acquired U-Pb ages of detrital zircons from the Difunta Group, NE Mexico, and the Chicontepec Formation of the Tampico-Misantla Basin, 700 km to the southeast, indicate that both units are correlative with the Wilcox Group of Texas.
Late Cretaceous-Paleogene Foreland Sediment-Dispersal Systems in Northern and Eastern Mexico: Interpretations from Preliminary Detrital-Zircon Analysis
Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene stratigraphy of the Mexican foreland-basin system broadly resembles that of the Alpine foreland basin in that both contain initial deepwater (flysch) deposits overlain by younger molasse-type deposits.
Evolution of Late Cretaceous–Paleogene Foreland Sediment-Dispersal Systems of Northern and Central Mexico
Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene strata of northern and central Mexico were deposited in a retroarc foreland basin that was at first narrow but expanded eastward during the Paleogene.
Soyatal Formation and Related Strata: Onset of Sedimentation in the Cretaceous Foreland-Basin System, Central Mexico
Turbidites of the Soyatal Formation and broadly equivalent units represent the beginning of sedimentation in the Cretaceous-Paleogene foreland basin system in central Mexico.
HIGH-FLUX VOLCANIC EVENTS OF SOUTHERN CORDILLERAN MAGMATIC ARC RECORDED IN FOREBULGE AND BACK-BULGE DEPOSITS OF THE NORTH MEXICAN FORELAND BASIN (LATE CRETACEOUS), NORTHEASTERN MEXICO
Two major magmatic events that occurred in western Mexico during Late Cretaceous time are recorded in the North Mexican Foreland Basin (NMFB).
