Register for a part time PhD whilst in full time employment

What is it about?

This article has 2 themes: 1. Dr Sheelagh Campbell FIMF, Honorary Editor-in-Chief of Transactions of the Institute of Materials Finishing (2002–2010) and Principal Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, sadly passed away in 2010. A laboratory at Teledyne-Impulse-PDM, Alton, UK, has been named after Sheelagh. The activities of the laboratory are described. 2. In the same laboratory, a full time employee has registered for a part time PhD at the University of Portsmouth. The article presents a good example of how a PhD can be carried out whilst an employee is working full time.

Why is it important?

The article will be particularly of interest to full time employees thinking about registering for a part time PhD.
